In the heart of
Po Valley, near Mantua, Parma and Sabbioneta.

Ostello Bortolino opening, 17/11/12

The Hostel

A solitary house, surrounded by tall poplars and foliage that changes color with the seasons. Originally, it housed several families at once. There was a single shared bathroom and a fresh water  pump outside. A path for carriages and bicycles running in front took you, in the space of a few minutes, to a bridge constructed out of boats floating on the great Po River, dividing Italy in two. Don Camillo, in a classic movie scene, is seen bicycling past this very house and on the wall you can read: Forza Bartali! (Hurray for Bartali!) in honor of a legendary cyclist from the 1930′s who often sped past on his furious quests. During this period, the famous folk painter Antonio Ligabue roamed this same path, searching for food and inspiration and, more than once, stopping to take shelter in the old house’s cellar.
The house was built in the late 1800’s but it is in the 1950′s and 1960′s it came into its own, revealing the quiet richness and moody feeling of the lower Po river valley. In those years, political passion, described by Guareshi, warmed the souls of the house’s inhabitants who wore tabarri (typical winter-clothing similar to an Argentinean poncho), in winter, and, in summer, picnicked on the Po River’s wide banks eating salami and drinking Lambrusco. In this peaceful, magical, space, bordering Parma and Reggio Emilia, our hostel is located. It is painstakingly restored, but still surrounded by the poplars and sunflowers and spirits of times gone by. Although it is near the riverbank, and in constant risk of flooding, we are very fortunate no other buildings can be built nearby.
Regardless of its seeming isolation, the hostel is less than a kilometer away from a charming village and conveniently located for exploring the Lower Po River Valley, containing some of Italy’s greatest food, culture and art. There is the town of Sabbioneta, the “small Athens” of the Gonzaga family, Brescello, land of the literary and cinematographic saga of Don Camillo and Peppone, Gualtieri, second home to Antonio Ligabue, and, most importantly, Mantova, a rare gem, the city of many festivals, including the stand-out Festival Letteratura, which is, without exaggeration, the most important literary festival in the world.
Our hostel has six rooms, each with beautiful views of the surrounding area. There is a large yard with a veranda and an outdoor BBQ for summer feasts. Nearby, you will find many bike paths and rowing clubs, as well as Osteria Bortolino, conveniently located next door to the hostel. Our restaurant has been serving authentic local food and wine for the past twenty years.
